In light of recent newspaper articles dealing with attacks on kids that are using Snapchat, Discord, and a few other social media apps, I have taken the following extra measures at Teen Lounge effective immediately to continue to ensure that we keep our members safe. Please see one article below this post. The following measures have been put into place this afternoon.
1. All current and future members that are junior high age, 14 and under will no longer be able to use the cam, or voice chat feature in the chat room. This includes any staff member 14 or under.
2. All members under the age of 14 will need parents permission to join the Forum and chat room. That can be emailed directly to me from the parents email to: qndcody@gmail.com
3. Any new member will not be allowed access to the video or photo rooms in the chat room until they have been a member for at least 30 days. There is a rank I added called "Newbie" which will be given to new members, and their status will be changed if there are no reports of misconduct within that 30 day period.
4. Anyone wishing to join the Forum effective today will need their registration approved before they are allowed to post in the Forum.
5. No facial picture avatars will be allowed to be posted in the user profile in the Forum by any member, regardless of age.
6. At anytime, the parent of any member age16 or under may request that their child's account be deleted, and I will honor that request.
Missouri child advocacy group urges caution for kids on social media
QUINCY (WGEM) - Experts say the danger posed by online predators has only grown during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Those at the Child Advocacy Center of Northeast Missouri said a young girl in the Hannibal area was attacked by someone she first met through social media a couple of weeks ago.
Executive director Julie Seymore said five other attacks have taken place over the past two weeks, most of them around the city of Wentzville, just outside of St. Louis.
Seymore said because kids live in a more digitally connected world with all sorts of options to connect with people across the globe, it does expose them to the dangers of the internet.
She said apps like Snapchat and Discord are just two of the ways perpetrators are using to find potential victims.
“That amenity of not having that person right in front of them, they feel safe so boundaries are diminished at that time, they are sharing lots of information,” Seymore said. “That alleged perpetrator is filling some type of need for that child.”
Seymore said they are constantly adapting to inform parents, schools, and children about dangers and methods to being safe.
She says for parents, it’s important not to take away your child’s devices, but instead try to either set boundaries or work with your children, as they will find a way to get online regardless.
