IHSA New Changes

As many of us that plays sports and our schools, found out major changes that will be taking place for all school sports. These changes were made by the IHSA. One will go into effect in 2010, and will eliminate conferences. Here is the change:

Beginning in 2021, the IHSA will assign football teams to eight or nine team groupings (i.e. “districts”) based on classification and geography. Previously, schools did not officially know their postseason classification until the completion of the regular-season. The IHSA will assign each school’s regular-season games against their district opponents. Districts will be set for two years, allowing home and away scheduling within the district. Schools will have the autonomy to schedule their non-district opponents for any open weeks, but those non-district games will not count toward playoff qualification. The district assigning process will be similar to how schools are assigned to Regionals and Sectionals in other IHSA sports and activities.

Although I will have graduated in 2020, this will affect a lot of you in junior high that are involved in sports.

Hopefully this will let schools in Districts play that are a reasonable distance from each other, where we do not have ridiculous travel times of 2 hours or more to play a game.

That will be nice not have to travel so far. You spend all day in school, take a long bus ride, then have to play an hour basketball, or 2 hour football game, then get back on the bus for another long ride home.

It sounds like it will make things easier to on parents and save schools money on gas for the buses.

I am glad they are finally doing something about the way they chose what schools play other schools in Conference, Sectional, and Regional play off games, this is long overdue.

It's about time they took the distance we have to travel into consideration when they create these conferences.
